Shipping from Mexico to the United States: What Documents Do You Need?

Exporting products from Mexico to the United States offers exciting business opportunities, but the process comes with strict documentation requirements. Whether you’re new to cross-border logistics or simply want to ensure compliance, understanding the required documents is key to a smooth and efficient shipment.

1. Commercial Invoice

This is the most essential document in the shipping process. It lists the seller, buyer, value of goods, detailed description, HS codes, and country of origin. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) uses this to determine duties and confirm the legality of the transaction.

2. Bill of Lading (BOL)

The BOL serves as a contract between the shipper and the carrier. It provides details about the cargo, transportation method, and delivery destination. For ground shipments, you may use a standard BOL or a Carta Porte (required within Mexico).

3. DODA (Documento de Operación para el Despacho Aduanero)

This digital document is required for customs clearance in Mexico. It combines data from the pedimento and other logistics information into one QR-coded document that must be presented at the border.

4. Pedimento

The pedimento is the Mexican customs declaration. It includes the shipment’s value, tariff classification, taxes, and origin. A licensed customs broker must prepare and submit this document.

5. Packing List

While not mandatory, a packing list supports your invoice and provides added clarity for customs agents. It includes quantity, packaging type, and dimensions.

6. Certificate of Origin (if applicable)

For goods that may qualify for tariff exemptions under the USMCA (formerly NAFTA), a certificate of origin may be required to prove eligibility.

7. Additional Permits or Certifications

Depending on the type of goods (e.g., food, electronics, textiles), you may also need specific government permits from agencies such as COFEPRIS, SAGARPA, or FDA for U.S. entry.
